How Many Calories Did You Really Burn on Your Elliptical Trainer Workout?
You jump on your elliptical and you starting turning the pedals. After what seems like forever, you have managed to tick off 5 miles and burn 400 calories, according to the read out on the machine. That Chinese food you ate last night is finally burned away and you can feel great when you sit down to your salad tonight. But, how do you know the number on the machine is the true number of calories you burned?
If during your workout you increase your heart rate, manage to sweat throughout the workout and need to breathe faster and harder, you can feel good about burning a significant number of calories during your workout. But, the number on the machine is just an estimate and according to experts in the field of fitness, that estimate can vary from machine to machine.
Experts agree that consumers should recognize the difference between the realities of fitness and the expectations. Many people expect they can depend on the calories burned readout as a means of planning their menu for the next day. This is especially true of people who are trying to shed a few pounds. No fitness machine, whether it is an elliptical, treadmill or a stepper can predict how many calories the body truly burned.
How to Make the Estimate More Accurate Whether using an elliptical trainer at home or in the gym, it is important to choose a model that asks for your age and weight before starting a program. If the calories are figured without these two factors, there is sure to be a huge variance between the actual calories burned and those appearing on the readout. How can a machine predict the number of calories burned if it has no idea what type of body the user is working with. Advanced calorie burn readouts will also take heart rate into consideration and adjust the calories burned total based upon the heart rate throughout the workout.
Using the Calories Burned Readout as a Benchmark
The best way to use the calories burned readout on your elliptical machine is as a benchmark for improvement. If you managed to burn off 150 calories without stopping the first time you used the elliptical, write down that number somewhere close to the machine. Over the course of the weeks ahead, notice how the number of calories burned increases while the effort you are putting forth seems to remain the same.
As the body adjusts to working out, you will be able to work longer and harder on the elliptical machine managing to burn more calories with time.
Using an off machine calorie burn calculator can also help gauge performance. If, for some reason, you replace your elliptical machine one day, the readout for the same workout you had been completing on your old elliptical may register as burning fewer calories. If an off machine calculator is used, no matter what machine changes take place, the same formula for calculating calories burned will be used.
No fitness machine will definitely monitor the inner workings of the body precisely. The elliptical machine is no different. Using a generalized math formula for the amount of energy needed to complete a certain exercise, the elliptical calories burned readout will estimate how much energy you used during your time on the machine. This is only a guess, not an absolute.

The Kettlebell and the Baseball Player's Fitness!
This article is for all of my baseball players who believe in a well structured strength and conditioning program. This is for all of you baseball players that are young and those of you who are veterans to the game. Kettlebells are a hell of a way for you to achieve a level of both optimal strength and conditioning within the scope of your overall preparation for the game you so love to play.
How much emphasis do you put on training your athleticism? Are you only worried about batting cage time and field time? How much of the skill of your game, as far as, hitting, throwing, and catching the ball can you improve on, really? If you think about these questions logically you know that everyone has a ceiling and that the only baseball players who truly succeed in these skills are those that can do them longer and more consistently.
Kettlebell training offers a solution for you in terms of achieving this long term consistency that I am talking about. Lets be honest here, spending 9 hours a day in the batting cage is not going to make you that much better of a hitter. However, if you have the core strength, shoulder stability, and hip power of an optimally conditioned athlete then you can improve your total performance in everyone of those specific baseball skills that I mentioned. Training with kettlebells allows you to cover an array of physical categories consisting of strength, power, flexibility, and resiliency to just name a few.
Developing that core power from training with the iron bell may not improve your batting average by hitting more balls, but it may improve your homerun category because the balls you hit will be hit much harder due to an increase in your strength. The speed you gain from kettlebell training may actually improve your batting average because that bunt or infield grounder you laid down might normally result in you being thrown out, but maybe not this time with the proven speed results one can achieve through kettlebell training!
Kettlebell training for baseball players should be mandatory. This is the perfect tool to fit the mold of a baseball player. Look, I am a strength and conditioning specialist and I know from years of experience what it takes to get athletes into top-notch shape. I’m not telling you to just forget about the batting cage or taking those infield grounders, but I am saying that most of your off-season and pre-season time can easily be wasted there. You will hold onto and improve those basic skills, but with a sound kettlebell strength program you will amplify those skills much quicker! Train hard and enjoy my friends.

Best Muscle Building Foods After Your Workout – Don't Skip the Post Workout Meal!
After spending a gut busting 45 minutes in the gym exhausting your muscles to force them into new growth you need to make sure you give them the raw materials they need for repair. You will want to pick the right muscle building foods to make the most of your recovery.
There are a couple of guidelines that you must follow to ensure maximal nutrient delivery during the 2 hour window of repair. If you skip this meal or eat the wrong thing then don’t even bother wasting time in the gym. It’s almost like telling a construction worker to build a house but not giving them wood and nails. They can work all day but nothing will be built. The same goes for your choice of muscle building foods.
The post workout meal absolutely needs to be very low in fat. The reason for this is you don’t want anything that is going to slow the absorption of the proteins and carbohydrates. You must eat plenty of healthy fats throughout the day to fuel huge muscle growth but avoid them for your post workout meal.
You must get in between 30 to 50 grams of high quality protein depending on your bodyweight. It is highly suggested to drink whey protein post workout because it absorbs very quickly and the amino acids will be shuttled to your muscles faster. Don’t worry about slow absorbing sustained protein for this meal because you should plan on eating again within 2 hours and your post post workout meal will include slower digesting proteins.
The last component to a post workout meal is a high glycemic index carbohydrate. This is usually has a higher sugar content and will absorb quickly. This is the 1 meal of the day you can take in something sweet and take in some sugars without getting fat. Don’t go grabbing some Hostess Cupcakes though because those are also loaded with fat and will screw up what you are trying to achieve. Juice is o.k. to drink with your protein powder but don’t drink soda because the high fructose corn syrup actually converts to sugar faster than your body can handle and will typically be stored as fat. If you want something solid have a piece of fruit like a banana.

2 Minute Sit-Ups
Is it possible to do sit-ups in only 2 minutes ? Yes it is. Start by lying down on the floor. Bend your knees to a position that they are comfortable at. Put your hands behind your head. Hold your feet on the floor at all times. Now try to get up and reach your knees with your upper body. This is one of the best fitness exercises for getting nice and hard abs.
5 Minute Step Up Program!
Find a step that you are comfortable with. I am guessing you are just starting out. So start slowly with one leg on the step and the other one on the ground. Keep switching. You are emulating walking stairs. After 1 minute of warming up speed things up to the level of about 80% of your maximum.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this indoor cycling exercise, I’ll try and explain it a bit. Indoor Cycling is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle called a spinning bike. In a class of other stationary cyclists, you pedal while motivating music plays and an instructor talks you through a visualization of an outdoor cycling workout. Emulating hill climbing and traveling down hill, you are sometimes pedaling as fast as you can, other times cranking up the tension and pedaling slowly from a standing position. Cycling helps you to focus inward and to work on your mind and your body. This is an ultimate workout for any women’s fitness program.
Cycling burns a big bunch of calories, if you feel the need to count them that is. An average 340 to 450 calories can be burned in 45 minutes. Cycling is an awesome aerobic workout that causes your heart to pump to a healthy and fast pace. It also tones your quadriceps (front thigh muscles) and outer thigh muscles.
The great thing about cycling on a stationary bike is that you are in complete control. You adjust the tension and you determine your speed. However, be prepared to be mesmerized by the visualization process which may magically transform you into the heat of the race.
It’s good to note that indoor cycling doesn’t require a tremendous amount of coordination like other aerobic activities. This just makes it easier to concentrate on your form for total women’s fitness benefits.
Get some good shoes with a hard rigid sole that are functional for a cycling class. The pedals can be hard on your feet, so check with the shoe salesman for the best suggestions on what they offer. You might want to do your own research for the best shoes for you.
