Many people discourage kids from exercising for various reasons, from avoiding injury to focusing on academic performance instead. But research has shown that exercise isn’t just for grown-ups — kids will also benefit from a good amount of exercise in many ways. Here are some of them.

#1 – Exercise sharpens the mind.

Exercise and sports are a great venue for kids to sharpen their skills, both physical and mental. The improvements can be basic (better hand-eye coordination) to advanced (knowing how to catch, kick, or throw a ball). Exercise builds muscle and teaches kids to maintain a healthy weight level early on, preventing obesity before it has a chance to sets in.

#2 – Exercise builds self-esteem.

Growing up, especially through the adolescent years, can be a very stressful period for a child. The need to mingle with other youths and develop a sense of self is imperative during this stage, and exercise and sports can offer kids the opportunity to do both. Kids who join sports while in school are more likely to be happy with their social lives.

#3 – Exercise builds relationships with friends and family.

It’s been said that you get to know more about a person after an hour’s worth of play than after a day’s worth of conversation, and this is no more true than with family and friends. When kids spend time playing with their parents, family bonds are strengthened and fostered. Likewise, kids stay away from drugs and other negative influences when they’re more focused on sports and studies.

Of course, there’s always the expected benefit of good health to throw into the mix. The earlier kids learn about the importance of good health, the more likely they are to carry the habits into adulthood, and perhaps even pass on their lessons to their own kids one day.
