Utilizing Protein Supplements

Using protein supplements has become very important to athletes. This has been the case for years, but now the use of protein powder has become more scrutinized. There is a new argument almost every day for which type of protein powder is best. Another person will argue about how much protein you actually need on a daily basis.

Most fitness enthusiasts agree that they all need more protein than a average individual will need. Athletes put much more stress on their bodies than the normal individual does.

So, how much protein should I consume every day?

As mentioned above, this is a question that will have many different answers. I have seen amounts from ½ grams per pound of bodyweight to 4 grams per lb. of bodyweight. Then you have people that say these numbers should be based on your lean body tissue, not your overall bodyweight.

This year there was a study done with egg protein powder. Scientists wanted to see how much protein your body could handle in one sitting. Subjects were given different doses of egg protein powder from 5 grams up to 40 grams. The more protein subjects took, the more that protein synthesis was elevated. That is until they reached 20 grams. The amounts over 20 grams gave no more increases in protein synthesis, even the 40 gram dose. So it does look like the higher doses have less returns.

Should this study be your benchmark to taking protein powder. I don’t think so. This is only one study, there needs to be more research performed with multiple types of protein powder, not just egg protein powder.

I guess this shows that you cannot come up with just one amount for everyone, whether it be amount of protein powder at once, or amount of protein per day. It is still a big experiment.

Protein is important if you are looking to change your physique. Regardless of your goals, you need to take protein. You also have to consider the type of diet plan you are on. You have to consume your calories from some macro nutrient and you can’t have 200 grams of fat per day. Hefty protein use is a logical step. If you are a are on a low carb diet you will have to eat extra protein to meet your caloric needs. Protein will serve as fuel for your body when carbohydrates are minimal.

There are lots of factors to be included in this discussion. Everything from your activity level to the above mentioned nutrition plan.

Possibly a good thing to do would be to do your own experiment . Try taking in around 1 gram of protein per lb. for awhile then change the amount and type you use, increase or decrease your amounts of protein and see how your body reacts. One thing to think about before doing this is to try this little project for an extended time. Decide on the best protein powders you can and take your time. You cannot adjust your protein intake for only a week or two and expect to get changes.

You have to think about all the athletes over the years who have preached the importance of taking in high amounts of protein supplements. Is it possible that they were all wrong, that consuming 50 or 60 grams of protein in one sitting is useless? I would guess that it would take tons of data to prove this, otherwise bodybuilders will still be using increased amounts of protein in to achieve the results they are wanting.
